    Abstract

SUMMARY Tendonitis of equine digital flexor tendons is a very frequent pathology in athlete horses, and its gravity, in many cases, is so heavy that, even we use the better therapy, we are not able to safe the agonistic carrier of the bowed tendon’s horse. For many years veterinary have been trying to find a solution to this problem, which is apparently simple but in reality is very severe. Veterinary doctors have been focused their attention on medical and surgical treatments and also on non conventional therapy. Aim of this article is to check what we really know about medical therapies, with particular attention to use of hyaluronan, mesenchymal stem cells and electromagnetic fields therapy. Of these treatments we will evaluate the mechanism of action and the results that we can obtain with their use. We will compare, if it’s possible, obtained results to indicate which is, in our opinion, the best treatment to employ. Tendon splitting is the best therapy to treat superficial digital flexor tendonitis in its acute phase, also the use of hyaluronan and mesenchymal stem cells may improve and enhance the tendon’s healing process.
