    Abstract

SUMMARY Schwannomas are classified as benign or malignant tumors of peripheral nerve’s sheath, with symtomatology depending by the compressive effect of tumor size. They usually arise from nervous plexus or from a ganglio, developing along the course of a nerve. These tumors often affect the spinal nerve’s roots in the lower cervical and superior thoracic length and the nerves originating from the brachial plexus, while rarely affect the distal portion of peripheral and/or cranial nerves. Dogs bearing nerve sheath tumors are middle aged or older. The purpose of the present study was to describe an anomalous case of large schwannoma located on the right haunch’s region of a three years old maremman shepherd dog, examinated in Clinical Veterinary Department on May 2004. The only clynical syntom detectable was a distorted deambulation, ascribable to the mass’s weight. After a careful clinical check-up and routine diagnostics procedures, an echographyc examination of the mass showed the presence of cystic formation with a corpuscular content, mixed to solid areas. The tumor was surgically removed and submitted to a histologic exam. It was diagnosed as a “malignant myxoid schwannoma”. A 9-month clinical follow-up demonstrated the absence of tumour recurrence.
