Abstract

RIASSUNTO Viene segnalato e descritto Leucochloridium paradoxum in Philomachus pugnax (pavoncella combattente). La storia tassonomica del genere Leucochloridium risulta assai complessa. Braun nel 1901 e 1902 classificò le specie conosciute nel genere come sinonimi di Distomum macrostomum scoperto da Rudolphi nel 1803. Il genere venne successivamente rivisto sotto l’aspetto tassonomico da Witenberg (1925), il quale valutò i caratteri biologici oltre a quelli morfologici per la diagnosi delle specie. Szidat (1936) rilevò che sotto il nome di Distomum macrostomum erano presenti specie diverse, una descritta da Rudolphi (1803) con il nome di Fasciola macrostoma ed una descritta da Zeller (1874) e da Heckert (1889) come D. macrostomum. Secondo Kagan (1952) L. paradoxum corrisponderebbe alla specie studiata da Zeller (1874), mentre la specie identificata da Heckert (1889) sarebbe una specie diversa che Kagan chiamò L. heckerti; tuttavia, ancora nel 1958 Yamaguti, nel suo monumentale Sistema Helminthum, riportava L. macrostomum come genotipo del genere Leucochloridium mettendo in sinonimia L. paradoxum. La presenza di L. paradoxum non risulta apparentemente segnalata in Italia. Infatti, Stossich (1896) descrisse e raffigurò una specie appartenente al genere Leucochloridium come D. macrostoma. Comunque, la diagnosi specifica risulta un po’ sommaria e la figura poco chiara, per cui questa specie deve essere classificata come specie inquirenda. Successivamente (1947) Piersanti ha tracciato una mappa di L. macrostomum in Italia, denunciandone la presenza in molte specie di uccelli migratori. L’autore non ha riportato, però, descrizioni e/o disegni dei parassiti osservati nelle varie specie animali, per cui non è possibile identificare i trematodi coinvolti. SUMMARY Leucochloridium paradoxum is reported in Philomachus pugnax. The taxonomic history of the genus Leucochloridium appears very complicated. Braun (1901, 1902) classified the known species of the genus as synonyms of Distomum macrostomum found by Rudolphi (1803). The genus was reviewed from the taxonomic point of view by Witenberg (1925), which evaluated morphological and biological characters for specific diagnosis. Szidat (1936) observed that, under the name Distomum macrostomum, different species were present, one described by Rudolphi (1803) as Fasciola macrostoma and one studied by Zeller (1874) and Heckert (1889) as D. macrostomum. According to Kagan (1952), L. paradoxum corresponds to species studied by Zeller (1874), while the species identified by Heckert (1889) would be a different species which Kagan called L. heckerti; however, yet in 1958 Yamaguti, in his monumental Systema Helminthum, reported L. macrostomum as type species of genus Leucochloridium and L. paradoxum as synonym. The presence of L. paradoxum does not result apparently reported in Italy. In fact, Stossich (1896) described and figured a species from the intestine of Numenius tenuirostris as D. macrostomum which belongs in the genus Leucochloridium. However, because the specific diagnosis is so brief and the figures so poor, this species must be listed as species inquirenda. Thereupon, Piersanti (1947) delineated a map of L. macrostomum in Italy, reporting its presence in many species of migrant birds. The author did not describe and did not draw the parasites observed in the different animal species, therefore it is not possible to identify the involved parasites.
